This day 5 years ago, an odd type of social networking site was exposed to the world. Was it a blogging tool? Well, Kinda. Was it a Social Networking Site? In a way, yes. Was it a sharing site? Perhaps…. What was this new site that allowed you to create a profile on and let you post a message similar to Facebook yet here’s the catch, you have to do it in 140 characters or less. It’s Twitter, or what was then Twttr a Social Networking site that had many asking those same questions. When the site launched to the public 5 years ago the concept was definitely something that no one had seen before and as blogging became more and more popular learning to get your point across in under 140 characters seemed impossible. Thanks in part to short url companies that came to the rescue of many blogs that had nearly that many characters alone in their url bloggers, businesses, and many others have found a way to use twitter as their portal to the masses while still maintaining their information mainly on their own site but linking to them from twitter.
But twitter is not just for the blog happy, tech savvy, know how’s. Almost everyone you know is now on twitter and I mean almost everyone, people in high public standing as The Pope or President of the United States are on twitter and others just as important to you as like possibly your granny or gandpapa are using the site too. Twitter, which started out as a head scratcher and took nearly 18 month to gain its first 600,000 users, is now averaging 600,000 new users a day and a site that on their opening day saw only 224 tweets as we like to call it now averages over 250 billion tweets every day! Yes again that is 250,000,000,000 tweets a day… So go on.. add one more tweet to your day and wish Twitter a Happy 5th birthday! Happy Tweeting!
