Do You LOL when you are with your friends?

It's crazy to think that just ten short years ago saying the above sentence would have gotten you the proverbial "Deer in the Headlights" look. Abbreviations or Acronyms that didn't even exist until the evolution of "texting" another word rephrased for the modern era or S.M.S. (Short Messaging Service). Words like these that have now found a common place in our current English vocabulary, so common in fact now that some have even been inducted into our English Dictionary. So for fun I have comprised a list of the top Ten Acronyms or Abbreviations that we use today that didn't commonly exist ten years ago.

1. LOL - Did you know that LOL is actually a word in Dutch that means fun, although in English we use it as an abbreviation to mean Laugh Out Loud. It is nearly impossible to go through your day and not see someone using LOL in a text or online post somewhere. LOL has become such a popular term that in March of 2011 it was formally inducted into the Oxford English Dictionary. So go ahead and tell me something funny and I will make sure to LOL.

2. OMG - Which stands for "Oh My God" or "Oh My Gosh" depending on your view of religion has found it's way into our text and messages as a way to express disbelief or shock! So the next time the dog has an accident on your friends rug, just reply OMG!

3. ROTFL - A spin of LOL, ROTFL or "Roll On The Floor Laughing" is another common acronym used to express extremely funny situations that go beyond just "Laughing Out Loud".

4. BRB - Are you in a hurry and don't have the time to tell someone that you will "Be Right Back"? Then this acronym is for you.. BRB has found it's way into many useful situations where the boss walks by as you are recieving an Instant Message and you need to tell the other person you will rejoin the conversation just as soon as that person leaves.

5. TTYL - Or "Talk To You Later" is a great way to end your conversation either online or through a text message. This acronym has become the 21st century replacement for the once ever so popular "Thank You" or "Best Regards" that you would find on a hand written letter. For those of you asking what a hand written letter is, I hang my head on shame...lol.

6. IMHO - Some times our opinion matters and we just need a way to say it and "In My Honest Opinion" there needs to be an acronym for it!

7. IDK - Which stands for "I Don't Know" is the perfect way to respond to something we just really don't have an answer to... although it does seem to fit right in to how a teenager would respond to you in person if asked a question.

8.WTF - Ever in that moment where you are shocked by someones comment? Sometimes there is just no other way to express it then with an expletive response, hence WTF or "What the F" expletive, I'm sure you can figure out what I am trying to say there....  

9. BFF - Do you have that Best Friend that you will cherish in your life forever? Oh you know you do, we all have them... if so then that person is your BFF or "Best Friend Forever".

10. BTW - "By The Way" we are at the last acronym of our list. I know, I know there are plenty more but I have other articles to write and BTW thanks for reading this post, IDK if you will reply and IMHO I hope you do so that we can see what list you come up with I'm sure I will LOL about it later, well TTYL!

It's amazing to see how technology has influenced our modern day culture in not only how we operate and function but even in how we communicate. We have become a society that is always connected and always on the move, finding new ways to compress our sentences to allow us more time to acomplish other goals throughout our day.
